چکیده

We introduce the notion of an “adaptive growth process” in order to explain an experimental result from the 1950s in which a complex mechanism capable of distinguishing between two sounds emerges from a homogeneous chemical solution. We present a very simple computational model which exhibits an adaptive growth process. Adaptive growth processes could have practical applications in adaptive control systems and may also play a role in biological development. keywords: self-organisation, complex systems, reinforcement learning, Gordon Pask

To evolve an ear: epistemological implications of Gordon Pask's electrochemical devices

In the late 1950's Gordon Pask constructed several electrochemical devices having emergent sensory capabilities. These control systems possessed the ability to adaptively construct their own sensors, thereby choosing the relationship between their internal states and the world at large. Devices were built that evolved de novo sensitivity to sound or magnetic fields. Pask's devices have far-reac...

Dynamic modeling and control of a 4 DOF robotic finger using adaptive-robust and adaptive-neural controllers

In this research, first, kinematic and dynamic equations of a 4-DOF 3-link robotic finger are derived using Denavit-Hartenberg convention and Lagrange’s formulation. To model the muscles, several springs and dampers are placed between the finger links. Then, two advanced controllers, namely adaptive-robust and adaptive-neural, which can control the robotic finger in presence of parametric uncer...

Controlling Nonlinear Processes, using Laguerre Functions Based Adaptive Model Predictive Control (AMPC) Algorithm

Laguerre function has many advantages such as good approximation capability for different systems, low computational complexity and the facility of on-line parameter identification. Therefore, it is widely adopted for complex industrial process control. In this work, Laguerre function based adaptive model predictive control algorithm (AMPC) was implemented to control continuous stirred tank rea...

Evolutionary Design of Virtual Plants

This paper presents a technique of evolutionary design for plants in virtual worlds, inspired from Richard Dawkins' adaptive walks within the space of biomorph structures. The design is carried out by interactive sessions with a multi-agent platform of generic virtual plants. The plants, growing in a three-dimensional environment, are based upon the fusion between a two-substrate transport-resi...

Monitoring and Diagnosing Multistage Processes: A Review of Cause Selecting Control Charts

A review of the literature on cause selecting charts (CSCs) in multistage processes is given, with a concentration on developments which have occurred since 1993. Model based control charts and multiple cause selecting charts (MCSCs) are reviewed. Several articles based on normally and non-normally distributed outgoing quality characteristics are analyzed and important issues such as economic d...
